Is Monday the 13th as unlucky as Friday the 13th. It felt like it to me after having to reprint a couple of jobs. Or is that just me being stupid.

How to make your own posters designs.

Jacob Hill - Monday, March 21, 2011
A lot of business use Graphic Designers to produce their posters for printing and I would suggest this is the best option instead of designing your own posters if you want a quality design. But sometimes having a poster design may not be cost effective for you. Maybe you are wanting to design a Wanted poster for a Birthday party, or a poster for a charity event or for school.

So what I would suggest that you do is download a programme for free from www.adobe.com and as long as you have not done it before then you can download Photoshop, Illustrator or Indesign for free for 30 days. This is a much better option than trying to struggle will Word or PowerPoint.

Once you have downloaded the software you can then start designing your posters.
See the below tips for designing a poster.

Keep your viewer in mind.
Have a short sharp headline.
Simple but stunning image - Try and keep it to one image like a movie poster.
Use clean simple typefaces (That people can read)
Don't have to much info. For example if someone is driving past a poster they need to read the important bits.
Telephone or website in large type.
Use a call to action - Like "Order Today" or "Buy Online"
Find a place where you can get poster prints from like us.

Good luck - And if you get stuck then we can design it for you!

Large Poster Printing Sizes

Jacob Hill - Sunday, March 20, 2011
When it comes to large poster printing, don't think that you have to order your posters in the A0 A1 A2 or A3 sizes. This is a common misconseption by quite a few new customers as they think their large posters will have to be printed at the above sizes. Because we print onto a roll of paper that can be up to 1118mm then size does not matter.

This means you can order the bespoke custom poster size that you need. If you have a bespoke poster size then give us a call or contact us for a price as we could save you money on your print.

The other advantage by coming to us for your large poster printing is that we will check your files over before printing and will report back to you if there is a quality issues with the artwork you supply.

You do not have to have your large poster printing onto paper as there are other substrate that my be better for your projects. For example we can print onto outdoor waterproof substrate or produce Foamex Panels that are printed and laminated. So please give us a call on 01803 866060 or contact us for any questions or help.

Large Format Printing for ever changing

Jacob Hill - Sunday, March 13, 2011
I have been in the printing trade for more than 20 years now and have seen a lot of changes. And back in 2001 I went to work for Debenhams to work in their Pre-Press department. In that department we use to prep up files for Litho, Digital and Large Format Printing.

While I was there, Debenhams had 20 Encad 50 Inch Printers. These were used to supply the 100+ stores with all there Pos posters. It was incredible the amount of work that we use to through all these large format printers and it was incredible about the amount of issues we came across with the Large format Printers. (I am lead to believe that now only have one large format printer that produces all the work. While I was there i under took an ICC colour Management course which solved a lot of colour issues that we had.

After leaving Debenhams in 2004 I started up my own Large format Printing business with an Epson 9600. It did everything I need it to do. Then in 2007 I took over Scriveners Reprographics. Because there were some big changes in the print trade which would effect Scriveners I decided to make the main part of the business being Large Format Printing. After selling Epson Printers on ebay I decided to Buy two Canon IPFs 12 colour printers. to this day they still see me proud.

But what now. As I am looking and buying another Large Format printer in the next 12 months and there is so much to choose from and what they can now do amazes me. Here are some examples.

The Epson GS60000
A 64 inch Solvent Printer. I have heard some good reports and bad reports.

Canon imagePrograf IPF9000
I do like my Canon printer as it produces very nice fine art images and photo prints. But I prefer to widen my services and keep the old printers for now.

Mimaki
This printer gives you the option of white and metallic inks. Sound good, but is it? will I used the extra inks that much?

Oce Arizona
Now this is a flat bed large format printer. Ok I like this and Océ is part of the canon Group. How I would like this to be my next step but my pockets are not deep enough.

There are so many Large Format Printers  inc HP who uses latex inks.

Then I came across Direct Jet printer that was on the Russel Brown Show It is a bit small for me but its interesting.

I will be looking deeper into a lot of large format printers over the next few months and will keep you up to date with my findings.  Cheers Jake

Hi I'm an italian photographer it's really an interesting technique. Whhen you shoot the 3d images what kind of technique do you use?
2 shots one for the left, one for the right, or you can achieve the 3d effect using a software.
Thank you

Probably the longest Panoramic photo poster of Torbay in the World!

Jacob Hill - Sunday, May 09, 2010

Extra Long poster of Torbay - In Panoramic Format.

Just For Fun! The Image above was taken by myself from a spot near Brixham Harbour just a short walk from Furzeham Road / Shortfeild Lane. Some of the clouds looked quite dramatic I thought.

From left to right you can see a bit of Broadsands, Goodrington, Paignton, Preston, Torquay, Thatchers Rock and Brixham.

If I was to print this as a long poster, I could reproduce it at 8 meters wide by .5 meters high. (It could go up to 16 meters wide by 1 meter high for a road side graphic).

If You live in Torbay and have sea views then you may see your house on a larger version - The large image is still a smaller version of the final print but there is enough info to see various buildings and structures.

I Would like to print this picture out and put it up somewhere in Torbay for the public to view,
Any suggestions were! Please comment below or contact me.

CLICK HERE TO SEE THE BIGGER PICTURE (It may take time to load + Your browser my let you zoom in and out)

If I get enough interest I will be printing out some smaller ones at 200cm wide by 12.5cm deep - They will be printed, laminated and mounted onto 5mm Foamx  for only £59 each. If you are interested then please contact me at sales@scrivs.co.uk

Cheers Jake

It looks pretty cool, I did notice some chromatic aberration on some of the boats, but it is a great image, good job!

I really like this. Would love to see it printed on a large peice of canvas.
Wedding Photographer commented on 30-May-2010 08:33 AM
Wow - the clouds are dramatic! I never thought I'd say it, but I actually miss the British weather... It changes every few minutes, so you're never bored....

Great panorama...

You could take it another day, at exactly the same time and it'd be equally interesting :)
Lincoln wedding photographer commented on 21-Jun-2010 11:51 AM
Superb, deserves to be printed and hung in the town hall> Congratulations, it must have been a lot of work
Postcard & brochure printing commented on 21-Jul-2010 06:47 PM
8 meters wide! Wow that would be a big print! That's pretty interesting, I wonder if you had to stitch a lot of panoramic shots together to get that?

Poster Printing

Jacob Hill - Saturday, April 24, 2010
Poster printing is simply a piece of paper that is deigned to be hung on a vertical surface, but probable one of the most effective form of advertising.

Posters have been used for over 200 years in public all over the world. And in todays world they are still being used as a marketing tool. A good example is the current election posters.

An advertising poster needs to give the viewer a short sharp message to be effective. During the election there will be plenty of posters on bill boards were each party are  putting down the opposition and glamouring up what they do.

From time to time some of the party political posters become in famous. There is one poster that was so effective that the phrase was used for many years - The phrase was "Double Whammy" which was used to attack the Labour Party in 1992.

Do you have any favourite posters!
