Giclée Fine Art Prints

Scriveners Definition of a Giclée fine art print is a print using Archival Ink and substrates that also accurately resembles the original Art.

Giclée Prints Introduction

Giclée printing has become one of the major methods of print for fine art reproduction market. There are some good reason for this. Artist can reduce their overall outlay because their fine art prints can be printed on demand, this also allows artist to publish more of there work and give then more options on printing at different sizes and substrates. With the right equipment and techniques their prints can be reproduces accurately.

In some cases our customers had difficulty telling which was the original and which one was the giclée print. One of our customer sold her original water colour painting by accident because she couldn't tell which one was the original and which one was the print.

Giclée Inkjet Printers

There are three main printers that can reproduce High Quality Giclée fine art prints (also known as large format printers), they are Canon IPF, Epson Stylus Pro and Hp Designjet.  Here at Scriveners we use to have two Epson Stylus Pro Large Format Printers, we then changed to the Canon IPF Large Format Printers because of the many benefits that the Canon IPF Printers had over the Epson Stylus Pro Printers. The Canon IPF produced a higher density blacks, a wider colour gamut and printed quicker than the Epson. One of the issues we had with the Epson  was that the neutrals (grays) were effected by different light sources.

The Inkjet Printer is just part of the process, A RIP and icc colour profiles are also very important. Some Giclée print companies do not run a RIP to their printers because of the expense and this is their biggest down full, this is because the RIP uses ICC Colour Profiles to manage the colours to the printer.

Other important factors include archival inks,  in-house custom icc profiles and High Quality Watercolour Paper for Giclée Printing

Archival Inks and Papers and Substrates

Giclée Prints are produced from inkjet printers as you may have gathered. This doesn't mean that you can produce giclée prints on your A4 inkjet printer at home. The Fine Art Trade Guild have certain guidelines to follow, but we don't feel they go far enough. A Giclée Print needs to have been reproduced on an industrial printer, that is accurate to the original and has been reproduced from archival inks / paper and substrates. The Canon archival Inks we use have a life of 100 years, but this is only effective if the paper or canvas print is acid free and has archival properties
